The Eurocopter AS355 Écureuil 2, is a twin-engine light utility helicopter. The AS350 was originally designed and produced by Aérospatiale and Eurocopter, and is now manufactured by Airbus Helicopters. Aérospatiale identified the need of a civil-oriented aircraft in the 1970s, following the production of their Gazelle aircraft which had not sold adequately in the commercial market. The firm started developing an economic and affordable rotorcraft, which became the single engine AS350 Écureuil. The firm soon decided to introduce the twin engine variant, named the AS355 Écureuil 2.
