Introduced in 1950, the De Havilland DH114 Heron was a small, propeller-driven airliner, and a successor of the DH104 Dove. De Havilland wanted to create an economical and easy-to-maintain aircraft after the end of the second world war. The new aircraft was derived from the Dove, sharing many characteristics with its predecessor. De Havilland extended the Dove’s fuselage, and installed 2 added engines mounted on the wings. The company named the new aircraft the DH114 Heron, aiming to be in favours of the regional and commuter airline market. The DH114 Heron was generally well received, due to its spacious interior which could be used for civil transport, or modified as a freight aircraft, while the additional engines were a reassurance for passengers travelling.
