The Piper PA-23 was the first twin-enginge aircraft manufactured by Piper, with the aim to succed in general aviation. Piper inherited the designs for the PA-23 from Stinson Aircraft Company, when they bought the devision. Piper was forced to make some changes to the initial design after the prototype’s maiden flight, this including swapping the engine to twin Lycoming O-320-A’s, the aircraft receiving the name Apache. Along with productions for the Apache, Piper had commenced a more powerful version of the aircraft, featuring two Lycoming O-540 fuel injected engines and a swept vertical tail. The aircraft became known as the PA-23-250, designated the name Piper Aztec.
