The Eclipse 500 (officially Eclipse Aerospace EA500) is a small six-seat business jet, originally produced by Eclipse Aviation, later upgraded and produced by Eclipse Aerospace. The base for developing the aircraft was the Williams V-Jet II, which was originally dedicated to become a demonstrator for the FJX-2 turbofan engine. Williams did not pursue production for the aircraft created, however as the demonstrator gained plenty of attention, Eclipse Aviation decided to further develop the V-Jet II project after being founded in 1998. Designated the name EA500, the new aircraft retained the airframe of the demonstrator, while using new advanced manufacturing techniques for the structure. The EA500 had flown first in 2004, powered by two lightweight Pratt & Whitney Canada PW610F turbofan engines in aft fuselage-mounted nacelles. The Eclipse 500 was introduced in 2006, and had become the first of a new class of very light jets.
