The Douglas DC-3 is a propeller-driven airliner and transport aircraft introduced in 1936, which had a permanent effect on the aviation industry pre-war. Designs for the aircraft were derived from its popular predecessors, the DC-1 and DC-2. After a long-lasting discussion between the CEO of American Airlines C.R. Smith and engineer Donald Douglas, Douglas had agreed to develop a sleeper aircraft, which was to replace American’s Curtiss Condor II in 1935. There was no protoype Douglas DC-3, the initial model was titled DST standing for Douglas Sleeper Transport. This was a low-wing, all-metal aircraft with conventional landing gear which performed well even on short runways. The DC-3 was a 21 seat variant of the DST, powered by either Wright R-1820 Cyclone, or Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp engines, depending on production.
