The Canadair CL-415 was built and designed specifically for aerial firefighting in the early 1990s. The CL-415 was a more modern, turboprop-powered new design, based on the predecessing CL-215T. Several aspects of the aircraft were ovehauled, such as the general aerodynamics and the cockpit arrangements, all focused on improving the performance of the CL-415. As a water bombarder, Canadair wanted the aircraft to be reliable and significantly modernised, to satisfy the demands of the market. The CL-415 utilised two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123AF engines. Shortly after productions commenced in 1994, Bombardier had bought the rights for the aircraft’s programme, this was later aquired by Viking Aircraft.
