Boeing Rotorcraft CH47, MH47 Chinook

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a tandem rotor, heavy-lift military transport helicopter, developed by Vertol and later manufactured by Boeing Vertol (today Boeing Rotorcraft Systems), the CH-47 Chinook being one of the heaviest lifting helicopters produced. In the late 1950s, the U.S. Department of the Army was seeking a substitute for the aging fleet of Sikorsky CH-37 rotorcrafts, subsequently purchasing the previously designed V-107 by Vertol. The aircraft soon proved to be insufficient for the assault mission and transport roles, which lead to a requirement of an enhanced variant. Vertol started developing the CH-47A Chinook (originally designated YHC-1B), in a tandem rotor configuration. These were powered by Lycoming AL5512 engines, optimising the aircraft’s lift, stability and thrust, achieving better performance, and offering an excellent base for a cargo aircraft with a number of loading equipment, such as cargo ramps and hooks. One of the latest, upgraded variant in the line was the CH-47F, offering modernised avionics and lower maintenance costs.
