The Antonov An-2 is a Soviet single-engine developed and manufactured by the Antonov Design Bureau. Antonov commenced designing the An-2 in 1946, proposing the helicopter to meet the 1947 Soviet Ministry of Forestry requirement, for a replacement of the less powerful Polikarpov Po-2. The An-2’s design compromises all-metal construction, with an enclosed cockpit and an extended cabin, facilitating for up to 12 passengers depending on modifications. The aircraft is also capable of operations on unsurfaced airstrips due to its design and configuration, making it an excellent aircraft for several challenging operations, these include scientific variants for atmospheric sampling, water-bombers for forest firefighting, medevac or air ambulance, and even lightly armed combat versions. The An-2’s versatility and reliable performance gave it a long service period, productions ongoing until 2001.
