Airbus Military (CASA) A400M

The Airbus A400M Atlas is a quad-engine military transport aircraft. It was designed by Airbus Defence and Space (formerly known as Airbus Military). The aircraft came following the FIMA group launching a requirement for a new tactical airlifter with strategic capabilities, that was to replace the aging fleet of the time, which primarily consisted of Transall C-160 and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. The airframe of the A400M comprises of mostly composite material, with the wings made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic, as well as the aircrafts’ T-tail. After a number of tests and discussions, it was determined that the A400M is to utilise turborop engines, mounted on the wing of the aircraft. Used for a variety of operations, the A400M can be configured to fullfill aerial refuelling, medevac or cargo transport roles, as well as military applications.
